from "Benjamin Hanks, Sr. of Pembroke, MA & His Descendants Updated October 1, 2005" by Kenneth Gene Carpenter,  527 - 77th Street Niagara Falls, NY 14304 United States

John Hanks, born 1470 at Buckland, Co Gloucester, England, in the reign of Edward IV of the House of York. (Hereafter on this page, the names of the direct line will be in capitals.)

GEORGE HANKS, son of JOHN, born 1505 in Henry VII Tudor's reign, in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, had three children:

  • Ann,

  • THOMAS, and

  • George.

THOMAS HANKS, born 1536, in the reign of Henry VIII, removed from Malmesbury in 1550 with his sister and brother to Stow-on-the-Wold, Co of Gloucester, where he married and had three children:

  • Henry,

  • Marie and

  • THOMAS II.

THOMAS HANKS II was born in 1570, during the glorious reign of Elizabeth and had four children:

  • Grace,

  • Mary,

  • THOMAS III and

  • Edmund.

THOMAS HANKS III, born about 1600, who lived under Elizabeth, James I, Charles I and Cromwell, is said to have served under Oliver Cromwell. (If so, he would have been close to fifty years old; the Commonwealth lasted from 1649 until 1660.) THOMAS III had four (or perhaps five) children:

  • John,

  • JOSEPH,

  • Thomas IV,

  • William and (according to the Hanks and Owens source)

  • Uriah, who married Laurana.

JOSEPH HANKS, born in 1630, under Charles I, moved to the hamlet of Donnington, in the parish of Stow-on the-Wold, married and had five children:

  • William,

  • Stephen,

  • Hester,

  • Mary and

  • BENJAMIN.

BENJAMIN HANKS was born in 1665 in Donnington. This BENJAMIN HANKS, son of JOSEPH, is believed to have been the BENJAMIN HANKS who sailed to New England in 1699.

HANKS, WILLIAM, from Suffield, Conn., settled on the present homestead of Alex. Clayton. He was an enterprising though eccentric man.  He planted a vineyard north of his house, which, for a while, was promising, but the boys would steal his grapes, which so vexed him that he let it run down.  On many places in West Pawlet a vine derived from this vineyard still flourishes.  He built a grist mill on Pawlet river just below the Frary bridge.  He died in 1807, aged 79; his widow was burned to death in 1809, aged 73.  His sons, who settled in this town, were Oliver, Joseph and Arunah.

Children of WILLIAM HANKS and HANNAH SARGENT are:

  • SARAH4 HANKS, b. 08 Jul 1759, Mansfield, Tolland Co, Conn; d. 06 Sep 1759, Mansfield, Tolland Co, Conn.
